Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer as more than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in more than 2 million people in the United States this year. The deadliest type of skin cancer - melanoma – is estimated to kill more than 9,100 people this year. That means one American dies from melanoma every hour.
Fortunately, most skin cancers, including melanoma, can be cured if detected early. In fact, studies show that the five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent — making early detection essential.
